Description: A Michael Jackson Inscribed Book Titled "My Autobiography Charles Chaplin," 1980. A first edition, published by Simon and Schuster in 1964 (dust jacket is missing), signed on the inside front cover in black felt-tip ink "To Mike and / Matt / the key to life / is growth / and happiness / sow your seeds / and reep [sic] its / fruits / and grow / Love / Michael / Jackson." Throughout his life, Michael Jackson was hugely influenced by Charlie Chaplin and read as many books about the silent era legend as he could. In 1979, while staying at the Royal Plaza Hotel in Orlando, Florida, Jackson met two 19 year-old identical twin brothers, "Mike" and "Matt," who were professional clowns at the nearby Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The three young men struck up a friendship and when Jackson learned of the brothers' background and show business desires, he said he wanted them both to read Charlie Chaplin's autobiography as Chaplin's life struggles paralleled their own story. About a year later, the brothers received a call from Jackson saying he wanted to see them; when the three got together, Jackson presented them with this Chaplin book and inscribed it for them that night. Mike, Matt, and Michael Jackson remained friends for the next 25 years and would get together as frequently as their schedules allowed. |
